Situated 30 kilometres south of Agios Nikolaos, in the narrowest part of Crete, and is the most southern city in Greece.
Ierapetra produces vast quantities of vegetables, which are primarily exported to Europe, and is a modern city with approximately 12,500 residents whose primary occupation is agriculture.
Large and small hotels line the city’s beaches, and there are numerous dining and entertainment establishments. During the summer, the majority of the city’s cafés and taverns are located on the seafront promenade.
The most well-known attraction of the city is the fortress Kalés, which is situated at the entrance to the old harbour.
It was constructed in the 1300s and is now used for cultural events. Afternoon strolls along the beachfront road to the fort are highly recommended.
