Stalos is located about seven kilometres west of the city of Chania on the northwest coast of Crete.
It is a seaside tourist settlement divided into two parts:
Kato Stalos, where there is a large sandy beach with a blue flag
Pano Stalos, about 150 metres higher, where a traditional village is built on top of a hill, 1.7 kilometres from the sea.
Along with Agia Marina and Platanias, the area is the most famous tourist resort on the island of Crete, with thousands of tourists visiting it for their summer holidays.
According to mythology, the area was named after the giant Talos, protector of Crete in antiquity, who had a bronze body and was the vigilant guardian of Crete, turning the island’s shores three times a day.
Kato Stalos offers many hotel facilities, car rental companies, beauty salons, gift shops, shops, supermarkets, tavernas, restaurants, cafes, and bars, making it one of the favourite holiday destinations.
Ano Stalos is the central part of the village, built amphitheatrically on the slope of a hill, 1.5 km southwards towards the mainland. The village has taverns, restaurants, hotels, apartments, villas and rooms to let.
The Beach is long, sandy, well-organised, and provides high-quality tourist services. It offers many amenities, including a lifeguard, beach bars, water sports, sunbeds, and umbrellas, while it is easy to access quieter parts of the beach without too many people.
Opposite the beach is the islet of Agioi Theodoroi. Due to the sand that characterises the beach, it is easy to play sports on the beach.
Many prefer Stalos for holidays because it offers peace compared to the neighbouring settlements.
